Information from the Assyrian Canadian
lobbying committee
OTTAWA, Tuesday, December 28, 2004
With less than 34 days to the Iraqi elections, it has not
been confirmed yet whether Iraqi citizens will vote from Canada.
After a meeting with the International
Organization for Migration (IOM), the Assyrian Canadian Lobbying
Committee (ACLC) and the IOM will be holding an information session
on Monday, January 10th, in Toronto where registration and voting
methodology and a question period will be on the agenda.
The IMO has been authorised by the
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct an Out-of-Country
Voting (OCV) Program for the January 30th elections in Iraq.
According to the IOM, there will be
three polling stations in the Greater Toronto Area (Mississauga,
Scarborough, and North York), one in Ottawa, and one in Calgary,
and there is a possibility for one in London due to its proximity
to Hamilton and Windsor.
"I believe that all Assyrian-Iraqis
residing in Canada should have the right to vote, regardless
of their location in Canada," Mary Younan, ACLC Vice-President,
said shortly after the meeting with the IOM. "I was hoping
for the by-mail registration and voting process, especially when
the polling centres will be limited to 5 or 6 across Canada,
but it is not possible due to the time limitation."
Voting and registration process is
being updated on a regular basis. Details on the January 10th
information session, in Toronto, will be available within the
next few days
Aina in its latest press
release has criticized the lack of secutrity which may force
the Assyrians in Iraq to participate freely in the elections
because they are continusously threatened. Despite all plees
from the Assyrian community the Iraqi government and the United
States have done little to protect them from the Islamist where
they can feel secure. They still live under seige to the point
that they often ask their moslem friends to do their shoping
for them. Nearly daily attacks against them include beheadings,
burnings, kidnappings, threats of violence, and mutilations and
other forms of terror to force them into leaving the country.
In response to various
appeals primarily because of public ralation the Iraqi governemnet
