Bullet-riddled body of Iraqi student leader found

25 Dec 2005

By Nabil Nourredine

MOSUL, Iraq, Dec 25 (Reuters) - The bound and bullet-riddled body of an Iraqi student leader was found on Sunday, a few days after he led a campus march alleging fraud in last week's election, a students' group said.

The body of Qusay Salahaddin was found close to a hospital in the northern city of Mosul with his hands bound behind his back and marks of strangling on it, a hospital source said.

Gunmen took Salahaddin, president of Mosul University's students' union, from his house on Thursday and bundled him into the trunk of a car before driving off, said Mohammed Jassim, a friend of the victim. He said Salahaddin used his mobile phone to make last-ditch pleas for help.

"Save me, the Peshmerga have kidnapped me," Jassim quoted Salahaddin, a Sunni Arab, as saying before the line went dead, apparently referring to Kurdish militia groups operating in northern Iraq.

Residents of ethnically mixed Mosul frequently blame rival Arab and Kurdish groups for the city's daily staple of murders, assassinations and kidnappings.

No group claimed responsibility for the killing.

Mosul was at the forefront of complaints of voter fraud in the Dec. 15 election, and in a referendum in October.

Some Kurds complained they were prevented from voting because their names had mysteriously disappeared from electoral rolls. Sunni Arabs, meanwhile, still bitterly claim busloads of Kurds were brought in from neighbouring Kurdish areas to skew results during the October referendum.

Sunni Arabs account for around 40 percent of Mosul's population of 2.1 million and Kurds for around 35 percent. Turkmen, Shi'ites and Assyrian Christians make up the rest.

As Salahaddin's body was taken from the university campus to a mosque on Sunday, some students said they suspected Shi'ite militia of carrying out the killing.

The day before he was kidnapped, Salahaddin led a protest of 1,000 students alleging fraud in the election and condemning a recent hike in fuel prices.

Sunni Arabs across the nation have complained of fraud after partial election results showed a Shi'ite Islamic bloc did better than expected in key areas including Baghdad.

Students said Salahaddin's appearance on Iraqi state television on the day of the demonstration sealed his fate.

"He did nothing -- just an ordinary demonstration in front of the students in the campus," said Jassim. (Additional reporting by Aseel Kami in Baghdad)
