Iraq Press Roundup

Minority religious communities in Iraq have faced a variety of hardships despite the fact that some, like the Assyrians, formed the cradle of Mesopotamia. The new Iraq, however, gives them less representation in the coming provincial elections than they may deserve.
Talks of identity are being used in political discussions as a mere tool to alter the political equation in Iraq, al-Ittihad newspaper of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan said Friday.

Misrepresentation of minorities

The Iraqi Parliament this week passed a measure to include minority representation in the provincial elections law, but allocates only a small number of seats to the groups in contrast to earlier agreements.

Iraqi lawmakers who showed sympathy for religious minorities, and who have issued condemnations against the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdish Democratic Party, were among the first in line to approve the unfair measure, the newspaper said.

The measure apportions one seat for each minority group in some Iraqi provinces. Including minority representation was an attempt to move the political process in Iraq forward, but in all actuality, it puts the entire process at risk.

The minority provision also showed the depth of the political crisis haunting lawmakers in Baghdad, as many of the same officials who voted in favor of minority rights in Kirkuk are the same ones who turn silent when it comes to the status of the disputed, oil-rich region.

Al-Basaer newspaper said Friday there were very few Iraqi political parties that expressed support for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona and the Republican Party in general.

Iraqis and the Republicans

The propaganda machine in Washington said many Iraqis had supported the Republican Party, an entirely misleading concept. The select few politicians in Baghdad who did support the party did so only to stay in power and to prevent a U.S. troop withdrawal, the newspaper said.

The future plan for the Democratic Party is to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. The objective, however, is to prevent American losses as additional combat fatalities, imprisonment or defeat of America is what Washington is really trying to prevent. Most of all, Washington is looking to restore the sheen to its damaged reputation, the newspaper said.

Meanwhile, the government officials who had hoped for a McCain victory, because these formerly exiled leaders rolled into town on American tanks, are now looking for a quick escape. These politicians know that they, along with the occupation forces, are rejected.

Iraqis, in opposition to the Republican Party, are demanding U.S. forces leave their country because of the devastation caused in Mesopotamia.

Addustour newspaper spoke Friday of the rumors of a possible coup against the current Iraqi government.

Why a coup?

Several Iraqi political parties are issuing false claims that since the Democratic Party won an overwhelming victory in the American elections Tuesday, a possible coup could occur in Iraq. With the Democrats promising to pull out of Iraq, there is a possibility of a rebellion against the current Republican-backed administration in Baghdad.

Many, however, see the possibility of a coup as slim because the rumors are carried by those who view the way of the gun as the avenue of change, not the democratic process.

The Iraqi people oppose bloody coups, as their past experience of regime change brought sadness, poverty and destruction. Meanwhile, history shows that the regimes that took power during a coup were unable to achieve their stated objectives and instead revealed their true personal interests.
