GREAT NECK, NY (July, 2008) - Every individual piece of art tells a story as unique as the artist who created it. Behind each story are the experiences that drive the artist to create. By looking at art through the lens of struggle one can find a clear commonality. The universal human experience of struggle is one that both divides and unites us. Whether a personal struggle, political turmoil or war, expression through visual art is a language that we all can understand. The power of visual expression creates a healing effect on both those who create it as well as those who view it. Allison Corey Fine Art is proud to bring you Art Peace, an exhibition that five artists from diverse backgrounds whose art reflects their own individual struggles. Art Peace will be on exhibit September 4th through the 18th, with an Opening Reception on Saturday, September 6, from 6 to 9 P.M.
Born and educated in Iraq, artist Paul Batou brings the beauty of his native language to the painted surface, together with what he calls, “the united colors of the earth”. Through his art he hopes to inspire “love, life, freedom and peace” in others just as he does for himself. While Paul Batou seeks to unify on a broad scale, Robert Patricy chooses to use his art as a coping mechanism for a more specific personal tragedy. For Patricy art is a creative and productive activity in which one can lose oneself momentarily. Using an ethereal abstract expressionist style, his work is based on memories of growing up on Lake Erie. Local Queens artist, Christina Ernst uses oil paint mixed with natural materials in a unique abstract style to depict her reflections on the suffering of the modern era. With influences ranging from World War I to the tragedies in the Sudan she aims to bring a humane awareness in order to overcome these situations. Christina’s art has been for her, a personal search for meaning and inspiration in life. Japanese-American artist Shino Soma uses traditional Japanese woodblock techniques to create intensely personal and emotional prints that reflect her upbringing in a Post-World War II Japanese household. Influenced by the Holocaust, artist Rain Sky uses images of faces in a collage technique to humanize the otherwise unfathomable atrocities and to give an identity to their numerous victims.
Art Peace aims to bring to light the importance of healing through creation; finding beauty through conflict. This exhibition highlights several artists whose art has all come from their experiences with struggle. Native Iraqi artist Paul Batou’s dream-like renderings of poetry, Christina Ernst’s abstract reflections on the psychological effects of war, Robert Patricy’s, emotionally stirring minimalist landscapes, Shino Soma’s striking woodblock prints and Rain Sky’s haunting imagery offer a variety of manifestations on the theme of struggle.
