No Christmas Celebrations in Iraq, Says Chaldean Patriarch

Baghdad (AKI) -- The head of Iraq's Chaldean Christian minority, Patriarch Emmanuel Delly has appealed on safety grounds to Christians in the war-torn country to refrain from any public celebrations for Christmas. Delly's decision was "motivated by the grave security situation in the country," the Chaldean patriarchate's Vicar Shlimon Warduni told Adnkronos International (AKI). The gesture was also meant as an "act of solidarity with the faithful of other religions, especially Muslims," Warduni added.
"Patriarch Emmanuel has asked the Chaldeans to fast for two days and to pray so that the country can overcome this pain and implore God to bring peace and security," he added.
The Chaldean Church and Eastern-rite Roman Catholic community numbers some 1 million people, most of whom live in Iraq where Muslims make up some 97 percent of the population.
In the sectarian violence that has blighted Iraq since Saddam Hussein was toppled in 2003, Christians who have been accused by extremists as agents of the West have frequently been targetted in murders and kidnappings prompting many to flee abroad.
