Nestorian label "imposed unjustly upon the Assyrians"

KentuckyLakeTimes.com

10, 08, 05

The Assyrian Homeland Web site* noticeably states that the Assyrian Church of the East (also known as the Assyrian Catholic Church) "is not [the] Nestorian Church." Their Web site proclaims that the Assyrian Catholics were unfairly given the name "Nestorian". The site owner states that the "Nestorian label" was "imposed unjustly upon the Assyrians, mainly out of cultural envy and theological bigotry in order not only to undermine the Assyrians' identity but also to deny their existence as they have done so throughout the centuries."

The Assyrian Catholic Church is just that - Assyrian - and not Nestorian. They do not practice the Orthodoxy of the Jerusalem Church which took the name "Nestorian" centuries ago despite the Assyrians' refusal of the name. Most Assyrians seem to be more interested in their ethnic identity rather than their Orthodoxy. The same Web site says that Assyrians "must go on proclaiming their identity and declaring their historical greatness."

History records that it was the Jerusalem Church, later being called by the name of Nestorian, that spread Christianity into Southeast Asia and the Far East. Assyrians remained mostly in isolated areas such as Edessa, Iraq and Iran where the majority of their members reside to this day. History does indicate that some Assyrians made advancements in science and missionary work abroad, but make no mistake, these Assyrians were not Nestorians. They are quick to correct you if you refer to them by that "misnomer."

Aramaic scholar Paul Younan stated, "Nestorius had nothing to do with the [Assyrian] Church of the East. He was not our Patriarch, he did not even live within our realm (the Sassanid Persian Empire.)... But, in reality, Nestorius was not one of us."1

It should be understood by everyone that Assyrians are not Nestorians and thus they do not practice the Orthodoxy of the ancient Jerusalem Church. An interesting article published in Zinda Magazine2 attests to these facts. These facts are also supported by the Encyclopaedia Britannica when it says that the Assyrian Catholic "church is not Nestorian" and that it "does not teach Nestorianism."

There is only one Nestorian Church and it is Orthodox and is the Mother Church of Jerusalem that fled from persecution in the early 130's A.D. These are the Nazarean followers of Jesus Christ recorded in the history of Eusibius and others. Today the Nestorian Orthodox Church is known as the "Nasrani Church of the East" but it cannot be confused with the Assyrian Catholic Church because as has been stated above the Assyrians are not Nestorians. The Nasranis are probably one of the best kept secrets on American soil.
