Take Action to help the Christians of Iraq

U.S. Congress is in the process of making its final decisions for the Appropriations bill this year. Now is the time to remind members of Congress to support the proposed Senate resolution about the Christians of Iraq.
This language directs the Department of State to submit a report “detailing U.S. efforts to help these communities, including assistance consistent with Article 125 of the Iraqi Constitution; assistance in building an indigenous community police force in the Nineveh Plains to provide the desperately needed security for the Christian community in Iraq that has been subjected to all forms of persecutions to drive it out of its historic homeland."

This language will help promote economic development, security, and potentially, explore and enable viable political representation of Assyrians through the implementation of Article 125 of the Iraqi Constitution, the legal vehicle by which to create a province in the Nineveh Plains. Such a province is essential to stabilizing our population in Iraq by allowing Assyrians to share control of local resources in proportions to their numbers with Arabs, Kurds, and other minorities.

Please send this letter to Congress by electronic fax at this link to show your support for this language:

Al Nujaifi: Attacks against Christians
affect all Iraqis

Friday, November 04, 2011

Iraqi Parliament Speaker, Ousama Al Nujaifi, assured on Wednesday that attacks against Christians were intended to tear the country apart and hinder the democratic process. For their part, Christians from Iraq and Lebanon called Iraqi government to ensure the right conditions for Iraqi Immigrants’ return.

“Attacks targeting Christians in Iraq were intended to tear the country apart disintegrate its social structure, attempt to spur discord and hinder the democratic process,” Al Nujaifi said in a statement issued by his office, which Alsumarianews received a copy of, following his meeting on Wednesday with a delegation of Christians in Iraq and Lebanon. “Targeting Christians affects all Iraqis without exceptions,” he pointed out.

“Iraq today requires cooperation, support and consolidation of historical bonds which has always united Iraqi people through better and worst,” Al Nujaifi continued. “Iraqis have a strong will to rebuild their country but will never be able to achieve it without the unity of all its components and the return of Iraqi elites from abroad,” he added. “The Christian delegation members stressed the necessity to draw back all Iraqis living abroad, including Christians, by ensuring them protection and providing them job opportunities,” the statement reported. “This is the government’s responsibility,”

the statement added. A senior Christian delegation landed in Iraq few days ago to mark the first anniversary of Our Lady of Salvation church on October 31, 2010 in Al Karrada District, central Baghdad.

The delegation, headed by Syriac Catholic Patriarch Egnatios the third Younan, included Maronites Patriarch of Antioch and all the East Mar Beshara Boutros Rahi as well as a number of archbishops.
