Hunting the Christians

In Iraq a distant war rages - a monastery tries to help the Christians

Erwin Decker
Friday, 13 May 2005

Translated by Wm. Warda

American Press seldom reports about the plight of the Christians in Iraq. Following is a recent article translated from a German paper.

When at night Erwin Decker comes out of the cave which is part of the monastery and looks, toward the south, he can see the lights of the city of Mosul some 30 kilometers away where millions of its inhabitants live. He also sees the lights of war rising up high, yellow flames, flashes, above the horizon, , , , the flight paths of flares which linger for several minutes over the city and illuminate everything as bright as day. Sometimes he also hears the roar of the jet fighters turning toward a new direction to attack.

Father Mofid looking toward Mosul

The cave which is dug in the rock belongs to the Christian monastery "of the virgin Mary" or 'Mart Maryam'. It is located near the village of al-Qosh in the northern Iraq, inhabited only by Christians. The Monastery of the 'virgin Mary' is the oldest of its kind in Iraq, it was built in 651 AD. The caves in the rock are the older part of it where a 1,000 years ago 400 monks lived in them. Some are just minutes away at the same level from the monastery which is inhabited by three monks. They belong to a community, which speaks the Aramaic language and practices its own religious rites. They are the Antonio-order of the chaldean Christians, a people who speaks the Aramäic language a denomination in union with the pope in Rome.

On the altar burns the lasting light of an oil lamp, a small bright point in the dark church. Two priests lit two candles, then Father Mofid comes from the side entrance. He takes the red book with the cross embossed on it and puts it on the pulpit. One of the priests stand on the right and the other on his left, each holding a candle in hand. The Father reads out a prayer illuminated with the flickering light. Twenty tree children and two old monks answer from the darkness with "Amen". So begins the day each morning around six thirty with purpose and enthusiasm.. The boy are orphans who were picked up from the streets of Baghdad and other cities. In addition there are eleven employees and four armed guards among the personnel who work in the convent.

In Mosul Christians are often kidnapped and killed. If Father Mofid must drive to Mosul, he takes a taxi and exchanges his black robe with an Arab Dischdascha. "I go to Mosul only if it is absolutely necessary", says he. He tells of something that happened recently. One morning a sheet of paper was pushed under the door of the Shaba family. On it was written that the family should deliver the Dominican Brother; Father Jawdat at noon to the Islamists. If not, the family will pay with blood. It was signed by the; Islamic movement of Iraq. Oraham Shaba and his wife Varina took their three children, grandparents and the aunt, loaded as much furniture as possible on their Pick uP and left the city immediately. They also warned Father Jawdat to take a taxi and flee to Syria.
They drove into a Christian village in the Kurdish mountains, its name they did not want to disclose. The family lives in a ruined building with plastic sheeting serving as roof. The children can not attend school.

There is an ongoing threat against the Christians in Iraq. "of the 700,000, who live in the country 250.000 have fled from their homes says minister Emanuel Youkhana of a small relief organization called Capni (http://www.capiraq.org) He is worried about the fate of those who fled. Minister Emanuel Youkhana himself escaped from Iraq during the Sadam's rule and arrived in Germany where in Wiesbaden he established the 'Christian aid program' to assist his compatriots. He is now back in Iraq for few weeks.."we are totally overtaxed", he says!. "we are in need of every thing. More refugees arrive daily . Few Mullahs and Islamic scholars have declared Fatwa and have decreed that killing the unbeliever [a code word for none Muslims] and the Kurds is not a crime. In Mosul recently eight churches were destroyed and 13 more in Baghdad. During the last four months 640 Christians were murdered in Mosul and 350 in Baghdad .

Emil Awia, 43, lived in Baghdad. with his wife and two sons. The eleven-year old Allan was kidnapped in front of their door on his way to school. An organization with the name "Mohammed's army" demanded 60,000 dollar as ransom. The sum was exorbitant for the garage mechanic. He went to the police, they advised him to pay the kidnappers and told him they were unable to help. Emil Awia suspected that the police knew the kidnappers, and perhaps they were working together.

The terrorists finally reduced their demand to 15,000 dollar. Friends and family sold everything hey could to come up with the money. Four hours after his son's release the family fled from Baghdad. During their travel to the north, the mother suffered a hearth attack and ever since she is incapacitated in bed at her parents home at Kirkuk. Emil and his sons live high in the Kurdish mountains in a tent with three other Christians . At night the temperature falls below zero, during the day the rain has turned the soil into mud. They dig a ditch around the tent to keep the water from entering into the tent. Minister Emanuel brings them a small Kerosene heater . They would like to build a house for themselves in the spring if they could but hey don't have the money to do so. "We live a difficualt life", says Emil Awia "but at least we are safe here. We will never return to Baghdad", .

Families from Mosul and Baghdad seek refuge in the monastery of the "Virgin Mary". They say they will remain there for few days, until they find accommodation in one of the Christian villages in the region. Father Mofid says "almost all Christians wish to leave the country. I am asked every day what we will do if the monastery is attacked? They tell me to devise some kind of secret alarm to alert the villagers of al-Qosh if the monastery is attacked. If worst comes to the worst, I will stand with my orphan children . Almost everyone in al-Qosh is armed", he says. Father Mofid, who is always well tempered, sounds very concerned. "What can we do otherwise, where else can we go?"

The 37 years old Father Mofid is the abbot of the monastery, but he does not want to be called by his title. Everyone in the region likes him. When there is a dispute in the surrounding Christian villages they come to him for advice, his name means "useful". He was appointed in 1994 to serve as the abbot of the monastery. Previously he had studied in Rome, for one year and from there he went to a chaldaen monastery in Beirut, later he served as priest in several Iraqi cities. After he arrived in al-Gush he was particularly concerned about the orphanage. In Baghdad the Order manages a second orphanage for girls. These are the only orphanages which the Saddam's government did not nationalize. Those nationalized were used by Saddam as centers where he could breed murderers.

Father Macarius is 95 years old and has lived in the monastery for the last 15 years. Previously for 20 years he lived in one of the caves inside a cliff . The old man has nearly no health complaints. He was sent to Vatican in 1981 where he stayed for 16 years.. He has spent the rest of his life in the monastery "of the Virgin Mary". During the cold winter days when sun is shinning, he sits in an unheated room and reads without eyeglasses from the old hand written books of the monastery's library. He reads the text loudly and the orphan children often sit around him and listen. In 1918 he saw the first airplane in the sky, one that belonged to the English Air Force. He learned about the second World War only from the newspapers. Even Saddam Hussein left the monks undisturbed.

One rarely sees the 85 years old Father Sliva in the inner court of the monastery. He lives withdrawn in his room, watches television, prays and reads. At the meal times he comes with the orphans into the lunch room. He is the only one of the three monks who still wears the long white robe the uniform of the Order. Many chaldaen Christians from Iraq, who now live abroad, send regularly money to the monks. Most of it is given by Father Mofid to the inhabitants of the village of al-Qosh where there is no work for them to earn a living. However Father Mofid worries greatly about the orphans who live in the monastery. Taking care of them is not an easy task. In addition to food they also need clothing and school books. The last large expense was spent on warm bed covers and ten beds for the younger boys at the large dormitory.

The children participate in the morning affairs of the monastic church as the monks sit between them. When It is cold, the children wear gloves. After the chores they go into the dining room for breakfast. There is no heating there either. Father Mofid sits under a picture, which shows the communion. Father Macarius sits on the left side and Father Sliva on the right, around the table. The meal in the monastery is simple. In the morning there is round bread and mashed beans. on Sundays jam; at noon nearly always rice, twice the week with meat, otherwise beans or peas. At Christmas and Easter the children get a Cola and a banana as dessert. During the meal - in accordance with the monastery rule - hardly anyone speaks. When they are all finished, Father Mofid rings a small bell from the drawer which serves as indication for rising.

A small bus takes the children afterwards to a school in al-Qosh. If there is no driver, the Father drives. After the lunch several new jeeps with squeaking tires arrive at the entrance of the monastery . Armed men step out of them. The guard of the monastery is not surprised and greets them in friendly manners. The visitor is a Kurdish sheikh with his small army. The Kurd leader sits with Father Mofid in the visitor's room, laughs with him and drinks tea.On the right and the left of the two sit the men holding their Kalaschnikows with their hands at their side. "I cannot change the tradition in Iraq, the monastery is open for all visitors. The sheikh has always his small army with him. I find that rather funny ", say Mofid.

In the church there is a rattling of pots, a baptism is being prepared. The chaldean Christians dip the child completely into the water. So that the baby will not freeze in the cold weather the baptism basin is filled with heated stones to warm the water. A boy holds the child in his arm until Father Mofid takes him in hands and dips him briefly in the stone basin with the help of the mother. He walks to the parents afterwards and gives them the baptismal certificate, and the Father registers the child in an enormous Church book which is over 100 years old. There is enough pages for another 20 years. However Father Mofid is afraid that because of continuous Christian flight no priest will ever fill the last pages of the book.
