France asks for coordinated European Union response to threats against Christians in the Middle East

Translated to english from Arabic

Jan. 5, 2011

PARIS (AFP) - The Secretary of the French Foreign Michele Alliot-Marie is sending a letter to , Catherine Ashton, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the European Union requesting the preparation of a coordinated response by the 27 EU countries to the al Qaeda threats against the Christians of the Middle East during a meeting of EU foreign ministers scheduled for January 31 2011. Alliot-Marie told Europe 1 radio, "I decided today to send a message to Ashton to tell her that not only France but the whole Europe should look at this issue on January 31 during a meeting of foreign ministers."

"In Iraq, the Kurds have revieved 20 000 displace Christian since 2003: How can we help the Kurds to actually host these good Christians" as an example of issues that must be covered by the agenda of this meeting. She explained that it was "how to help people significantly," pointing out that the Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini would also sign this letter.

The growing concern in the world for the Christians of the Middle East after the attack that claimed the lives of 21 Copts in the Saints Church in Alexandria on New Year's Eve, which came after another deadly attacks, also in Iraq. Al Qaeda has repeatedly threatened to kill the Christians of the Middle East. The French minister said "we must work together to receive and give asylum to those who feel threatened, but we must also work to those people who want to stay in their home countries."

She said "This is what needs to be done everywhere " among the Europeans" and this is what we will do. In another interview with the Wednesday newspaper Minot, Michele Alliot-Marie expressed her hope of returning Iraqis who were wounded in the attacks and were being treated in France to their homes later.

"What is the treatment of these people, logic dictates that they can return to their country. If they can not do this, it would be tantamount to giving the right to those who attacked them." She considered that "the objective of al Qaeda and Islamist militants is causing a clash between the Arab world and the West."
