Dutch Report reveals Kurdish cultural, ethnic, economic and political oppression of the Assyrians in Iraq
November 20, 08
While the Islamists in Iraq employ well publicized violent forms of terrorism to drive the Assyrians from their homeland Kurds use insidious methods of persecutions to extend their rule over the towns and villages where Assyrians have lived since before Christianity to dominate and incorporate the region into what they call Kurdistan. To not antagonize their Western benefactors on whom they depend for help they apply a two pronged policy to publicly appear to be helpful to the Assyrians but at the same time inconspicuously terrorize the community into subordination. A recent report prepared by the Dutch government highlights some of the tactics used.
• Human Rights Abuses, including Murders, with Impunity
• Fostering insecurity by Preventing Assyrians from establishing authorized Police Force to protect their towns and villages
• Illegal Land Seizure
• Economic blockade of the Assyrian towns in the plain of Nineveh
• Blocking Financial aid from the European Parliament or other EU countries to reach assyrians
• Preventing Independent Assyrians NGOs from receiving financial aid or meeting with international organizations.
• Distortion of the Assyrian History and Damaging ancient Assyrian Archaeological sites
• Preventing Assyrians from establishing print and electronic medias that are not controlled by the Kurds
• Using economic depravation to force community organizations, businessmen and women to help Kurds against the interest of their community.
(AINA) -- In a report by Ms Attiya Gamri Tunc, a Dutch politician of Assyrian background, accuses Kurdish political parties in northern Iraq of conducting a hidden cleansing campaign against the indigenous Assyrian population.
The fact finding report describes, among other things, the Kurdish policy of undermining and crippling the independent Assyrian NGOs by establishing new NGOs organized and financed by the Kurdish political parties with Assyrian names serving the Kurdish interest while masquarading as community organiztions .
As an example The report cites " the case of "the Nineveh Center for Research and Development" (NCRD), located in the town of Bakhdede in the Nineveh Plain, which was set-up after the fall of Saddam, but the Kurdish Finance Ministry funded the establishment of a competing pro Kurdish "Syriac Center for Research and Development" in the same town to work against the NCRD." and undermine it community standing "This same pattern of subversion has been repeated against the women's unions, student unions and others -- to starve these community organizations out of existence. Once again, the goal of the Kurds is to prevent the community organizations from helping the Assyrian civic development, by undermine, suffocating and ultimately destroying all organizations that are not controlled by KDP. This is being done with official KRG resources under the official direction of the KRG's Finance Minister, Sargis Aghajan" masquerading as community helper but striving to insure Kurdish supremacy over the Plain of Nineveh and its population, as a mean to claim it as part of Kurdistan.
Ms Gamri Tuncs report was prepared after her participation in the Dutch fact finding mission which visited the Assyrian region of Northern Iraq earlier this year (AINA 4-15-2008). Click Here to read the report
