New artifacts discovered in al-Hasaka (Syria) from the neo Assyrian period

ANA ASHUR Media & Translation Desk
Al-Hasaka - Agencies
From Lara Shabo
Sept. 23, 2007

Local and foreign archaeological missions are continuing their excavations in al-Hasaka governorate following what they have discovered important facts about the civlization in this area. The work done in the area unearthed many artifacts and here are some:

Tal Taban:A wall was discovered in the second platform and another huge wall which formed a part of two ground-floors, it was noticed that the north section of the ground-floor was partly covered with crushed lime stone and the pottery found belonged to the neo Assyrian period, in addition, an 8cm bronze statue of a man was discovered partially covered with silver and missing the right hand. They were also able to compile 51 cuneiform tablets, one of which is in a cylinderical shape while others are shaped on nail like forms.

Tal Hamidi:The Swiss archaeological mission's excavations discovered foundations going back to the Helenistic period in addition to tombs going back to the neo Assyrian period. The director of al-Hasaka archaeological office Mr. Abdel-Massih Baghdo explained that the purpose of working on this site was to reach to the old construction of what is known as the southern palace in order to understand the architectural nature of construction. Some of the artifacts found on site were a bronze bracelet, a bead necklace, and a clay flower pot.

Tal Mohammad Diab: The French archaeological mission unearthed the walls of a large home from the Mittani period with some drawings on the walls. In Tal Sukar al-Uhaimer studies indicated that the discoveries made by the Japanese archaeological mission from Tokyo University were many and varied, they contained stone fragments, clay dolls, pieces made of clay, bone tools, stone forms, and spindles.

It's worthy to note that Dr. Marie Lumiere who specializes in pottery continues her studies on pieces from the Neolite period and she has seen hundreds of pottery pieces from the early Neolite period in north of Khabour.

Dr. Lionel Gortyshon who specializes in old animal bones continues his studies and he explained that in Tal Sukar al-Uhaimer, people were able to domesticate sheep, goats, cows and his research will further demonstrate the nature of the environment and the animals which were found at the time.

On the other hand, Dr. Liniocci who specia

lizes in vegetation sifts through the soil which is full of remains of plants and charred seeds.
