Moslem Protesters set Fire to a Christian House of Worship in Egypt Cairo Egypt.-After a report by an Egyptian daily about prayers at a coptic community center in Odaysat, near Luxor Muslim protesters set fire to the building at 4 o'clock in the morning on Januray 19th 2006. Several members of both communities were reported injured in the subsequent clashes, in addition to two policemen. BBC Reports that At least 12 people were injured in Upper Egypt when a group of Muslims set fire to a Christian house converted to a church. This is the latest in a series of violent sectarian incidents in Egypt . Local sources asserted that holding Christian services in the center was forbidden since 1971. Recently the municipality was considering to remove the restriction and allow it to be used for prayer services. The prayer at the center was held on the night before the Epiphany, a Christian feast celebrating the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus to the Gentiles which falls12 days after Christmas celebrated by the Eastern Churches on the 7th of January. Holding of the prayer in a not registered church was intended as an act of protest by the Copts against the 150 years old restrictive Hamayouni law which forbids the maintenance and renovation of the Christian Churches but not the mosques. Petition for permission to repair or renovate a Christian house of worship often is ignored by the officials. Permission to repair the St. George church in the province of Sohag, has been denied for many years. A Coptic church in the province of Bani Khalid has been officially closed since 1990 and all request for permission to open it have gone unanswered. Last month president Hosni Mubarak gave official permission for the copts to do necessary repairs on the existing buildings and ordered the authorities to process such requests within 30 days. However building a new church still requires permission from the president. The Coptic Christian community is believed to make up 10% percent of Egypt's population of about 70 million.   ----
