Archbishop Mar Melis was awarded Australia's 2009 Citizen Award
On 26/1/2009 As part of festivities on the anniversary of "National Australia Day" , His Eminence Archbishop Mar Mehlis of the Assyrian Church of the East in Australia and New Zealand, was awarded the 2009 "citizen of Australia" by the Fairfield City Council.
Award was presented to him by the Mayor of Fairfield HON. NICK LALICH together with members of the City Council and local government representatives, as well as senior government figures and leaders in NSW Province .

The City Council honored him for his perseverance and dedication in serving the Assyrian community as pioneer of the Assyrian Church of the East in Australia, which contributed to the growth of the Church and the activation of its activities and services to the Australian community, as well as for the establishment of the "Saint of Hormuz School" and his support for the Youth Assembly of the Assyrian Church of the East in Australia, and his contribution and his recommendations, for a number of orientation programs for youth, to combat the influence of drugs and drink and the problems associated with them.
His Eminence Archbishop Mar Mehlis first established the Saint Hormuz, which is the first and largest Assyrian school in the diaspora. This has expanded into the birth of St. Mar Narsay secondary school, which will provide educational spiritual and national services for more than 850 students, run by a cadre of Assyrian teachers starting at the kindergarten, and ending with the tenth grade, in addition to his interest in sponsoring the youth and directing them as pillars of church and society in the near future, especially the youth of the Assyrian Church, which are mainly educational and spiritual activities, in education and preaching the word of God in their mother tongue, in addition to strengthening their participation in other aspects of advancement of their Australian community.
It should be noted that His Eminence, on 10/5/2007, was granted "the Order of Australia", a Medal of discretion conferred by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, and this prestigious award was to him by HE Mrs. Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of New South Wales at the headquarters of the state, for his service to his church and society and development of educational institutions, which has achieved the highest superiority to those of other Australian educationals.
