Abdulsalam's novel rendered into Spanish

Azzaman, November 20, 2005

Fatih Abdulsalam is perhaps more known for his daily columns in Azzaman newspaper which often attract wide readership for their daring and provocative subject matter.

Few of his readers are aware that Abdulsalam began his career as a novelist before joining the fourth estate. However, his immersion in journalism since the mid 1990s has not dented his interest in his favored literary genre, short story and novel writing.

Of his nearly dozen books, his novel When the Whale's Back Blazes seems to have secured for him an outstanding place in the heavily crowded summit of prominent Iraqi writers.

Written first in Arabic in 1993, the novel was translated into English in 2003 by the HATS OFF as U.S.-led forces were gearing to invade Iraq.

A Spanish version of the novel has appeared recently and a Norwegian copy is bound to be printed in due course.

International interest in the novel is forecast to surge as critics, whether in the Middle East or outside, see in it a rare blend of Iraq's history both past and present.

Although the author draws heavily on the Mesopotamian civilization particularly that of the Assyrian empire which flourished in northern Iraq, readers and critics say the book is something like a prophecy predicting many of the things taking place right now in the country.

Abdulsalam is no stranger to the Assyrian civilization. He was born and educated close to the ruins of Nineveh, the Assyrian capital, and spent most his childhood in a house that was a stone's through from what once formed its formidable walls.

For many readers the strife the characters are involved in has several parallels to what is happening in Iraq right now and the broader clash of civilizations pitting the Arabic and Muslim east against the secular Christian west.

But the plot is shrouded in Mesopotamia's 5,000-year-old history in which an Iraqi nuclear scientist and an Iraqi psychologist strive to decipher past and present mysteries.

Both delve into the enigma of Mesopotamia in a bid to discover whether it can contribute to alleviating modern crises wars, oppression and violence.

The book borders on science fiction but draws heavily on historical truth. It is not surprising therefore to find many bits and pieces of the novel's fictional content turning into reality today.

Although first published in 1993, the characters use gadgets and equipment we have come to know several years later.

The novel is not a thriller concerned with the smuggling of a priceless archaeological artifact as its emphasis on ancient Iraqi history might tell.

The novel reveals a strife-torn world where access and comprehension are almost impossible although it is not very much different from what we know of it today.
